==개요==
한반도 중서남부에 자리한 도. 경기도, 충청북도, 전라북도, 대전광역시, 세종특별자치시, 인천광역시 등과 인접해있다. 도청소재지는 내포시이며, 대전이 89년도에 충남도에서 분리 독립한 이후에는 천안시가 최대 도시가 되었고, 현재는 충남에서 유일하게 대도시 특례 지위까지 얻어 충남 최대 도시의 자리를 유지하고 있는 중이다.
충남의 인구는 약 212만 명이며, 면적은 8,245.5km²이다. 산하에 8시 5군의 기초자치단체가 있다.

충청'남도'라는 이름과는 달리, 실제로는 충청도의 남부가 아니라 '서부'에 있다. '충청서도'라고 해도 이상함이 없다. 실제로 조선시대에 모든 도를 동서로 갈라 좌도/우도로 부르던 시절의 경계와 거의 일치하고 충청남도는 충청우도와 거의 영역이 같다.

또한 도 명칭의 유래가 된 지역이 하위 행정 구역에 없는 지역 중 하나이기도 하다. "충청"이라는 이름은 충주와 청주의 앞 글자를 딴 것인데, 두 도시 모두 충청북도에 있기 때문.
